TIPS TO JUMPSTART YOUR CAREER AFTER A JOB LOSS
1.Find out why - If you've been sacked, you need to find out the reason as to why this happened. If your performance, attitude, abilities or behavior were to blame, then try to learn from the experience and never repeat the same mistakes again. Getting fired can sometimes be an eye-opener that spurs people towards positive change and a better future. 2. Don't blame everyone around you – A layoff is completely different from a firing. Most of the time, layoffs deal with company decisions to downsize, or restructure and very rarely are they about you as an individual. So it is very important to not take this situation too seriously - and you must never allow it to turn you into a bitter, angry person.
3. Try to let go - The initial reaction for most people who experience a job loss will be shock, followed by intense anger and then the feeling of being victimized. While it is important for you to grieve, get frustrated, and angry, dwelling on these reactions will not help. Try to move on. The worst thing you can do is wallow in self-pity. Never discuss bad layoffs at job interviews. By doing this, you can damage your job prospects and you can isolate yourself by remaining bitter and withdrawn. 4. Avoid all the negativity and focus on the positive - Try writing down all of your thoughts in a journal and limiting the amount of time to be angry. Find all the positive people who can encourage and motivate you. Keep busy with job-related and non-job related activities. Not only will you be more productive, but also you will be out of the dumps in no time at all and on your way to new and better job much faster. 5. Create a clear vision - Set specific goals with timelines. If necessary, identify a mentor and coach to guide and support. 6. Network- Talk to everybody you can contact. Forget shyness. Explain your situation positively and honestly. If you are open and pleasant, you will be amazed with how people will go out of their way to help you. 7. Assess and evaluate your employability -Determine your weaknesses and strengths and as appropriate learn a new skill, e.g. computer skills, customer service skills, human relations skills. 8. Update your resume - If you feel your resume is not up to standard, seek professional help in the preparation of your resume. Invest in a quality grade of paper and ensure that the presentation and cover letter are a true reflection of you. Let your resume be free from errors, watermarks, makeup and stains. Use technology and the internet to get your resume out to employers. 9. Prepare for the interview process in advance - Things to remember:
10. Believe in yourself and know that you can do it. You are responsible for your own success. You are a winner!!
